Belfast International Airport is the largest airport in Northern Ireland, a constituent country within the United Kingdom. The airport is located 11km (6 miles) from Antrim and 21.3km (13.2 miles) from Belfast city centre, the capital of Northern Ireland. The airport was and still is sometimes referred to as 'Aldergrove Airport' as this is the village at the West of the airport. The airport shares it's runway with RAF Aldergrove.
Belfast Airport has 6 car rental facilities, with most visible in the arrivals hall. The desks are always manned for when a flight lands.
In 2010 4,000,000 passengers passed through the airport, which is an 11.7% decrease than that of 2009. The airport is the second busiest airport in the whole of Ireland. The first usage of the airport site was in 1917 when the 'Royal Flying Corps' established a training station for training pilots during the 1st World War. From 1946 to 1998 many restructuring works and airport enhancements were carried out, adding new terminals and a new cargo terminal. The airport is still used by the RAF, but more so by passengers, pilot training procedures and private jets these days.
The airport can be reached by taking the M1 and M2 motorways, depending on which parts of Belfast of the country you will be travelling from or to. Regular buses are available from outside of the arrivals hall, with buses linking to Belfast and Londonderry. Metered taxis are in abundance, and a specialist Belfast city coach is available. There are 5 shops in the airport, with a specialist shop specialising in local and Irish merchandise called 'The Irish Quarter'. There are 7 restaurants and cafes in the airport, with each selling a different type of food and drink. There are also currency exchanges, but the exchange rates are usually extortionate.
